Press Release

Magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocks Haiti

Early evening on Tuesday, January 12 a 7.0 earthquake rocked the nation of Haiti. Initial reports are indicating that destruction and devastation is great. The prime minister of Haiti is reporting the potential for more than 100,000 casualties.

The Haitian capital was largely destroyed in the most powerful earthquake to hit the country in more than 200 years. The national palace is a crumbled ruin and tens of thousands of people are homeless. In public squares thousands of people are singing hymns and holding hands.

The quake was followed by numerous aftershocks, one with magnitude 5.9. The shaking was felt more than 300 miles away in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republican, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti.

We currently have 7 churches and 1 orphanage in Haiti, led by our national leader Guy Thomas who lives in close proximity to the epicenter.

Our Area Missionary Dave Stone has made numerous attempts to contact pastor Thomas, but communication is sparse and we are still waiting for information regarding our churches and our Foursquare family.

The Foursquare Church is poised to respond with relief supplies and financial resources. Many pastors have already contacted FMI to see how they can help. We are currently assessing the needs and our available resources and developing a long-term plan to bring relief, rebuild our churches and make disciples.

We will be in constant communication with your district missions representative with pertinent information and updates.

Dear Pastors and Leaders of the Southeast District:

As you have probably heard by now, there was an earthquake in PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti.

We have a close relationship with the Foursquare Church in Haiti and in fact; I am scheduled to be there next month with Pastors Gil Dirmann and Richard Sejour to minister in their national convention.

The Haitian capital was largely destroyed in the most powerful earthquake to hit the country in more than 200 years. The National Palace is a crumbled ruin and tens of thousands of people are homeless. In public squares thousands of people are singing hymns and holding hands. The quake had a magnitude of 7.0 and was centered about 10 miles west of Port-au-Prince.

It was followed by numerous aftershocks, one with magnitude 5.9. It’s said that hundreds of casualties could be a serious understatement. Reports say the main United Nations building in Port-au-Prince collapsed. The shaking was felt more than 300 miles away in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republican, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti.

We are coordinating any of our efforts with FMI and as we come to a decision as to how best reach out to this country, we will inform you immediately.

LET’S LIFT UP A UNITED NETWORK OF PRAYER for the many men and women of God who are declaring the Gospel and pray for their protection and safety. May this be our prayer: We pray protection, miraculous healings, restoration in acceleration of Kingdom progress for Haiti, and a total turnaround from this quake into a shaking of a nation unto salvation. Amen!

Jesus Is Lord!

2010 - A Year of Transformation! Pastors Scott & VeronicaAs we stand on the brink of a brand new year, there is something in my heart that rises up with a conviction that this particular change of calendar is more than just a "chronos" change, but this is a "kairos" moment. Chronos is quantitative, while kairos is qualitative!  The word kairos means that we stand at an opportune moment and season.  At the very end of 2009, I heard God clearly speak to me that '09 was a year of transition and '10 would be a year of transformation.  I receive that!  The word transformation means..."the state of being transformed in form, appearance, nature and character"...where do I sign up for that? In Genesis, chapter 35, we find the name change of Jacob.  As Jacob, he was a man who was known to strive.  Striving isn't necessarily a negative thing, but for many it can be based on the elements of the flesh.  God not only corrected that in Jacob but changed His name to mean "God Prevails".  I have an expectant confidence that, this year, we will see God prevail in our lives, our families, our churches and ministries.  I believe that, in order for me to realize the full benefit of all that God wants to do in me personally, I must honestly and transparently hold my heart and my life before the Lord and allow Him to prevail in me personally.  In other words, what are the changes (transformation) that needs to take place in my form, my appearance, my nature and my character?  I am not only willing to identify them but to surrender them and make the commitment necessary to bring about the changes.  All "change" begins with a surrendered life! This year, my prayer is that we would not only be faithful but that we would be fruitful.  Throughout the years, I have met ministers that are extremely faithful to God, based on their personal commitment and practices, but aren't very fruitful in ministry.  Oddly enough, I have discovered that what it takes to be faithful isn't necessarily what it takes to be fruitful.   I certainly don't think that you can ever remove the element of faithfulness from fruitfulness, but the determining factors of fruitfulness go beyond the personal practices of discipleship.  In other words, if you were hired to build the shuttle, it would be based on the fact that you know what you're doing when you show up on the job...not just that you faithfully show up!  Does my "form", (the way I do things) need to be transformed,  does my "appearance", (how things look around my ministry) need to be shaped and fashioned to meet the needs and demands of this current generation? As I get older, I find that, unless I intentionally fall out of love with the past generation, I will not be open to this current generation, and I will quickly lose my relevancy.  I have two teenagers in my home, two that are in their twenties (my niece is living with us) and a 7 year-old.  Trust me,  there are times when both they and I experience generational stress.  I have had to choose to learn from them and not get stuck in my "old ways"!! Now, what I will not back off of are the principles by which I live, but I am willing to change the methodology. What are the things that God wants to transform in you this year?  What do you need to learn in order to become more fruitful and what price are you willing to pay in order to come to that place?  Transformation isn't going to happen just because it's God's desire.  It will happen in those who are willing to allow it to happen and in those who will, in fact, seek after it.   More than ever, I see myself as the clay on the Potter's wheel.  So, my prayer is that God would have His own way.  May we all be molded, shaped and fashioned according to His will.  May we move into this year with a sense of determination and expectancy of the new things that He wants to do in us and through us! You are loved and appreciated!  As I look across the landscape of our district, I continue to be amazed at the level of leaders that God has given to us:  quality men and women of God of every race and nationality.   It's awesome and exciting.  I look forward to continuing to work together with you to make the dreams that God has given you come to fruition and reality.   This is your time; this is your season!  God has given you an amazing opportunity!  May you become all that He has destined you to be. For the King! Pastor Scott
Meet One of Our Pastors in the Southeast
Pastor Mark-Anthony and Katia Mitchell
Mark Anthony Mitchell
God is doing amazing things around our district!  During this recent holiday season a lot of our Foursquare churches reached out in significant ways into their communities.  We are going to share with you the total results of our combined efforts, but in this newsletter; we wanted to share one story with you of what God did through the Atlanta, Georgia Urban Foursquare Church.  Their outreach was called the "Holy Days Project".
Pastor Mark-Anthony Mitchell reports that God sent them several "angels" who provided lots of gifts; a little cash and lots of help evangelizing, shopping, cooking, organizing and wrapping. When it was all said and done between Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day at Atlanta Urban:
  • 300 needy families received full course meals for Thanksgiving and Christmas
  • 150 Lakewood children received 3- 4 Christmas gifts each at our Christmas party and on New Year's Day at Atlanta Urban
  • Over 100 participants from Campus Crusade for Christ and Atlanta Urban Church gathered for prayer and outreach to revitalize and empower a plagued Lakewood community.
  • Hundreds heard the gospel as we took teams of 10 outside of the church walls and into the streets of Lakewood.
  • At day's end 43 converts confessed Christ as their Savior!
  • 60 (1 wk) boxes of food for a family of 4 along with blankets and clothing were given to 60 families.

If this work has inspired you and you have a heart to see the liberation of the Inner-City through the Gospel of Jesus Christ, contact Pastor Mark-Anthony to help them meet their goal and make a gift now? Giving online through their secure website is the fastest, easiest way to put your gift to work immediately.  Simply click on the link below to give now or just to learn more about us at Atlanta Urban Church.
In March of 2008, Atlanta Urban Church was strategically launched to become the epicenter of a move of God within inner-city Atlanta's South End.  Atlanta Urban Church is a Christ centered multi-cultural, multi-racial, multi-class church.  They have programs for the entire family, but what defines Atlanta Urban is that they are a church that has a real spirit of love and acceptance toward all people.  They warmly welcome all people, no matter where they are on their spiritual journey, because in Jesus Christ, all people matter to God.
Pastor Mark is married to Katia Jacquel and have three daughters:  Jazmin, Khamira and Imani; and three sons: Mark Anthony II, Joshua, and Isaiah.
Their church is located at 1766 Lakewood Ave, Atlanta, GA 30315.

Christmas Devotional December 22, 2009
This is the Season! Scott and VeronicaJohn 1:1-5; 10-12; 14
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth".
Christmas is really one of the greatest seasons of the year! I know that there are many out there who have nothing good to say about the commercialization of Christmas, and while I certainly agree with the premise of their argument, I also believe that there is much good even in the celebration as it has become to be known. As I was recently driving down the road the other day, several "Christian Christmas" songs came on the air. My heart rejoiced when I realized that many pre-believers would be hearing the Word of God in the context of their Christmas celebration. I guess I'm a bit forgiving...I mean, what else would you expect an unredeemed world to do with a holy celebration of this magnitude?
office
I think instead of bemoaning what has become of Christmas, let's hold fast to what we know it to be and take advantage of the opportunities that lie before us during this season! Our house is full of joy and business during this time. Veronica loves to decorate for Christmas and every year, something seems to be added to the mix! This year, she added a "Candyland"...I will have to admit that this is one addition that I'm not complaining about. I'm not sure why the peanut M&M's keep disappearing!! I love having my family together, friends coming over and enjoying the fire with all of the beautiful decorations. I also love shopping for my family and sneaking up on them with those unexpected presents. It really is a great time!
To me, Christmas is about my freedom! I now have the right to be free from the power of sin and the bondage of torment. I am the redeemed of God and I have a hope and a future...ALL because of Christmas! All because the gift of God became flesh and dwelt among us. He laid down His riches and took on my poverty, He left His heavenly dwelling and endured the misery of life on the earth, He gave up life and endured the shame of the cross that I might be redeemed from the shame of sin and have eternal life...now, THAT'S Christmas. That's a gift that I can live in all the days of my life.
Christmas is the joy of heaven. It's the peace of eternity and the gift of a loving God who gave it all for children that He loves. I will unwrap gifts in just a few days that are kind and loving and a sincere show of a deep love, but at best they are temporal. I will unwrap the gift of my salvation every day for the rest of my life and then explode into life eternal! May our hearts and lives reflect the spirit of Christmas in who we are and in all we do.
May the Word that has invaded your heart and life produce life and blessing, health and wholeness, peace and prosperity in all that you put your hand to. We consider it a great privilege to partner together with you and my expectancy of all that God is going to do in your life and ministry reaches beyond what we have seen up to this point. Your best days are ahead of you and the best is yet to come!!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Meet Our New Southeast District NextGen Director – Jake Cordell

Dear Pastors and Leaders of the Southeast District:

It is with great delight and excitement that I announce the appointment of Jake Cordell as the new Southeast District NextGen Director.  Jake’s appointment becomes effective the first of January, and we are thankful that we are able to hire him on a full-time basis.

The Cordell’s will be moving to the Atlanta area around the middle of the year, after the birth of their child; presently, they reside in the greater Charlotte, NC area.  I have known Jake for many years, and he comes to us with strong recommendations and an awesome potential of all that God is going to do in our children, youth and young adult ministries.  I fully anticipate your local ministries becoming strengthened because of this new addition to our district team.

Please know the district office continues to be available to serve and resource you, and this new team addition will strengthen our ministry to who you are and what God has called you to do.

Thank you for praying for our entire team and Jake and Lindsay as they step into this new and very important role.

For the King!

Jake Cordell

Jake has been married to Lindsay for six years and they have an amazing son with a daughter on the way.

Jake and Lindsay have been doing ministry since 2003 working mainly with the youth and college age at local churches California and North Carolina.  They spent the last four years at Grace Covenant Church in Cornelius, NC.  Jake served both on the Camp Courtney Board of Directors and the Carolinas District Youth Planning team.

Jake is the new NextGen Director for the Southeast District, connecting and resourcing local churches through their children, tweens, teens, college age and young adults, as well as overseeing such aspects as camps and retreats.  Jake was baptized with the Holy Spirit and called into ministry at Camp Courtney so camp holds a special place in his heart as it relates to the Next Generation.

Jake’s passion is to see the next generation rise beyond the level that is known as normal and achieve not only their dreams, but God’s dreams for their lives.
